Intersectional or Itoh Peony Hybrids . . . A distinct and exciting group of hybrid peonies resulting from crossing woody tree peonies, usually the male parent, with herbaceous varieties. The resulting progeny, essentially an herbaceous plant with the flowers and foliage of a tree peony, reflects the most desirable features of each parental group. Little, if any part of the plant remains above the ground in winter, resulting in an excellent level of hardiness. Good levels of heat and humidity tolerance are exhibited by the Intersectional hybrids. Neat, compact, mounded plants with strong stems maintain visually pleasing habit throughout the growing season.
