PEONY: SANTA FE Newer Item For 2010 BREATHTAKING BEAUTY!!
|
$15.50
|
SANTA FE Peony offers a unique Color Combo!
Not fussy about soil, and very low maintenance!
Here's a cold-tolerant, low-maintenance, hardworking Peony you just won't be able to resist! Santa Fe boasts an unusual combination of colors -- fuchsia on the outer petals, creamy white within -- and a heavy midseason bloom, making it indispensable to Peony fans and cutflower lovers!
These large flowers have a sculpted look, so beautifully are the cupped petals held. They last a long time in the vase, and begin blooming about the middle of Peony season -- late spring or early summer, depending upon how far north you are! Cut all you like for indoor arrangements, but save a few for the garden, where they're eye-catching from across the street!
Santa Fe is a low-growing, bushy little plant, just a bit over 2 feet tall and no wider than 3 feet. It tolerates just about any well-drained garden soil, and is tolerant through zone 2 in the north -- surprisingly tough and adaptable for one so petite!
6" blossoms have a light fragrance.
Deep-green foliage contrasts with the vibrant flowers; plant makes a handsome backdrop for perennials that bloom later.
Pair it with Peony SORBET for an ultra-showy garden display.
Botanical name: Paeonia lactiflora ‘Santa Fe.’ Ships as a 3-5 eye bare root. FREE PLANTING / CARE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED WITH EACH ORDER. (10SP)

HOSTA: El CAPITAN Delightful NEWER For 2010 Growing & Shipped In 4" pot.
|
$10.99
|
Hosta El Capitan makes Slugs and Snails Give Up in Despair. dazzle your friends and neighbors with this unusual hosta.
The foliage is heart-shaped and deeply corrugated, even at a young age. Jagged margins of gold turn to yellow and soft cream in summer heat, making the rich blue-green centers stand out even more beautifully.
Three soothing colors on substantial, beautifully textured leaves
Such a splendid tricolor Hosta, 'El Capitan' would be lovely even without its ability to foil nibbling slugs and snails. But the thick, substantial foliage is a huge part of its appeal, with its subdued shades of blue, green, and golden-yellow. This is a Hosta to treasure in border or container.
The plant is topped by lavender blooms on 4-foot stems in midsummer, but they are insignificant compared to the foliage display. El Capitan is truly a fabulous hosta.
Reaching 40 inches high and a little more than 2 feet wide, 'El Capitan' is a useful size for large plantings in the border, imposing container specimens, and woodland settings. The heavy veining and substantial foliage thickness, which keeps slugs and snails from nibbling it, improves with each passing year. Long-lived, very adaptable to garden stresses from cold to heat, drought to poor soil, 'El Capitan' is destined to make a great impression in your garden. Ideal for USDA Zones 3-8.
Growing & Shipped in 4" pots. Limited Quantity available for 2009.

PEONY KOPPER KETTLE - Hard To Find ITOH HYBRIDS . . . New Shipment . . . AVAILABLE JUNE10, 2010
|
$59.95
|
KOPPER KETTLE is rare and hard to find -- But so very easy to grow.
This Itoh Hybrid, is a combination of garden and tree Peonies with the best traits of each
in one glorious package! Better disease-resistance than garden Peonies, it offers new colors for the variety. When the first blooms are cut promptly, it may even rebloom!
'Kopper Kettle' is a semi-double 8-inch-wide flower with petals that combine red, orange, and gold tones. The result is a glossy copper shine -- an utterly unique color for the Peony family. They bloom in late spring to early summer.
This plant looks like a Tree Peony, with a domed shape about 32 inches high and 24 inches wide. But it goes dormant as an herbaceous Peony does, dying back in autumn and reappearing in early spring. It will begin flowering the first or second year in your garden and will continue for decades -- Peonies are the longest-lived perennials of all, a lifetime investment in the beauty of your landscape.
The Itoh Hybrids are intersectional crosses of herbaceous (garden) Peonies -- P. lactiflora -- and tree Peonies -- P. lemoinei. They offer an increased color range, greater vigor, and excellent resistance to peony blight (botrytis paeoniae). Introduced by Toichi Itoh of Japan, they are very choice. 'Kopper Kettle' was bred by Roger Anderson of Wisconsin, and has been highly sought ever since its introduction.
'Kopper Kettle' tolerates heat, humidity, cold, and poor soil. Like all Peonies, it repels rabbits and deer, and it is very, very low maintenance once established in the garden. Find a place of honor for this special plant! Ideal for USDA Zones 3-8. VERY LIMITED QUANTITY FOR 2010. ORDER EARLY.
FREE PLANTING & CARE SHEET PROVIDED WITH EACH ORDER. . . . . .

Summit 'FRENCHTOWN'
Growing in 4" pots - Close to Blooming Size.
Plants average 10" to 14" in height.
Very unusual looking flower. Bright orange lip set on sepals that are very dark chocolate. Will often produce two spikes per growth regularly. This orchid produces delightful flowers everyone will enjoy.
Odontocidium is an intergeneric hybrid consisting of Odontoglossum and Oncidium. It grows in a wide range of temperature conditions from warm to cool. The flower spikes emerge often twice per year.
Light:
Low to medium. 1000-2000 footcandles. If this plant receives too much light the leaf tips will begin showing blackish spots. This is not abnormal for many intergeneric hybrids in the oncidiae group. Keep shadier in the summer and give it more light in the winter.
Temperature:
Winter nighttime temps should range from 55 degrees to 64 degrees. Daytime temps should range from 68 to 88 degrees year-round.
Humidity:
50% or higher is required. Humidity trays are helpful in maintaining proper humidity levels around the plants. Misting can be done in the morning as long as the plant leaves are dry by nightfall.
Water:
Water thoroughly being sure water is coming out all the drain holes of the pot. Water as the plant approaches dryness but do not allow it to become bone dry between watering. The pseudobulbs can be your guide. If the new pseudobulbs shrivel, this is a sign that you are not watering the plant enough.

ORCHID: VANDA Coerulea - Deep BLUE Blooms - BREATHTAKING!
|
$14.50
|
Vanda Coerulea- The "Blue Orchid" or the "Autumn Lady's Tresses Orchid"
One of a very few blue-flowering plants in the world, Vanda Coerulea is native to southeast Asia, India and Thailand, where it grows high at elevations ranging from 2500 to 4000 feet in the Himalayan foothills. Botanist William Griffith’s description of this unusual blue-flowered epiphyte in 1847 sparked much excitement amongst orchid enthusiasts and hybridizers, who were eager to add this rare plant to their collections. This orchid is both rare and endangered in its natural habitat and laws have been enacted to protect this wonderful blue-flowering orchid.
The flowering season for Vanda Coerulea is variable and ranges from spring through fall, and less often in the winter. The flowers are very large and are deep bluish lavender in color. The flowers are often 4-6" across in diameter and last approximately 2-3 months in bloom. When the flowers first open, they appear white to a light blue color, and within a week to ten days deepen in color. They generally bloom once a year, but have been known to flower once in the spring and then again in the fall. This plant grows 10-12" in width and will eventually reach 2-3' in height after many many years.
Light: This plant prefers to grow in medium to high light. Medium light for younger plants, and higher light as the plant matures. It should be grown in phalaenopsis light conditions to encourage large leaves and more foliage. It can receive more bright light in the winter as the days become shorter, but must be protected during the spring and summer to prevent burning or bleaching of the foliage.
Temperature: This orchid likes intermediate temperatures. It can take the heat during the summer with shade, high humidity, and good air movement. Night temperatures of 55-60 degrees F is ideal though it will tolerate up to 64 degrees and still flower. It is rumored that this plant will survive below freezing temperatures with a little harm to the foliage, but testing this theory could prove hazardous to such a beauty.
Water: The Vanda Coerulea loves healthy, clean water. So, water with rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis whenever possible. Municipal water supplies would be efficient as well so long as the pH is 7.8 or lower. Water as the plant approaches dryness, when in bud or flower, or when the media feels dry to the touch. This orchid likes 60% humidity or above during the summer months and can handle 40% or above during the winter.
Buyer will receive one potted plant - pot size 3.5". The leaves of this orchid will measure approximately 8"-10" in length. The bloom photo is for reference only.

Encyclia cochleata Orchid Species Seedling! Also known as the "Black Orchid."
We call this species, our Octopus Orchid! Recommended to any orchid enthusiast!!
It has flowers that are green with very deep blackish caps.
This is a well established seedling in a 2.5" pot.
We have grown very fond of Encyclias because of their ease of growth and oddball flowers. They stay in flower for a large part of the year as well!
We have had this plant bloom for over a year before taking 2 months off before reblooming again. My personal BLACK ORCHID has bloomed for over 4 years with only a short time off when it was left dry. A great bloomer.
This is a delightful, robust, easy to grow species that is almost always in bloom. From the Caribbean this is the beautiful colored form of cochleata.
Our sale plants are actively growing in 2.5-inch pots and have a 3-4 inch leaf-span. Bloom photo is for reference.

ORCHID: Angraecum eburneum var. giryamae
|
$10.99
|
This is an angraecum orchid, native to Madagascar and East Africa that is known for its beautiful green and white flowers that come out upside down -- or nonresupinate, in orchid-speak.
It's also known for producing lots of flowers on a long spike -- 15 to 30 blooms per spike. Spikes can become very long. The flowers are fragrant, but usually only at night.
Angraecum is a genus in the Vanda family of orchids. They like fairly bright but indirect light. Grown indoors, an east or west window with a sheer curtain is fine.
Keep them moist but not sopping wet – you can pretty much grow these like a phalaenopsis. Fertilize about every three weeks with a weak solution. You can grow these in baskets or mounted, as well as in pots with regular orchid media.
Our plants are currently growing in 3.5" pots and will be ready to up-pot soon. Current leaf spans are 7" to 9" wide.

ORCHID: ENCYCLIA cordigera
|
$10.95
|
Encyclia cordigera - very fragrant dark purple flowers with a lavender lip. This beauty is curently growing in 2.5" pots with a leaf span of 3.5" to 5" per plant.
Many consider the large showy flowers of Encyclia cordigera to be the finest in the genus. They have an intoxicating fragrance that varies slightly from plant to plant, but some say the pink-lipped flowers smell like roses. Flowers can last for well over a month. The species has received over 40 AOS awards, both for quality and for culture.
Encyclia cordigera is easy to grow under a wide range of conditions. Its natural habitats are low-elevation oak forests that are fairly dry and bright. It can be grown in the intermediate temperature range but will do equally well in warmer conditions. The best flowering will occur if plants are grown bright but they will grow and flower under as little as 2000 foot candles. Plants can be potted in a coarse open media but if you have a tendency to overwater, a mount or basket is a preferable option and will maintain healthy roots better. This species does not tolerate stale, dank potting media. The tightly clustered pseudobulbs can be as big as an onion on healthy plants but a mature plant does not take up much space and can be accommodated even in small collections.
